First generation of hip hop artists in Korea emerged in the late 1990s. Uptown, initially a trio of hip hop and R&B music, was the first to debut in 1997, but most people consider Drunken Tiger as the leader of the pack. While Drunken Tiger dominated the charts, Garion created the underground scene. Verbal Jint, with the nickname of “perverted sensitivity” has also contributed to the underground scene, and always produced new form of rapping with innovative styles of rhyming. Other notable mentions: Kim Jinpyo, Jo PD, Honey Family, Joosuc, 45rpm, etc.

drunken tiger
Drunken Tiger was a hip hop duo formed in the early 1990s. Tiger JK and DJ Shine met in an underground hip hop festival in the United States. Tiger JK was already a famous underground rapper in LA and DJ Shine was a famous DJ in NY. They formed a group, Drunken Tiger, and released their album in 1999. Soon afterwards, they dominated the charts. Ever since then, they have been recognized as the leaders of the Korean hip hop. In 2000, Tiger JK was charged with usage of illegal drug and had to spend short time in prison. That did not stop their success though, because their next albums were also huge hits. However in 2005, DJ Shine left the group, but Tiger JK went on to keep making music under the name Drunken Tiger. In 2006, Tiger JK was diagnosed with the worst case of myelitis. After a long period of struggle, he recovered, but has to take medicine for rest of his life. In 2009, Rakim, one of most influential and skilled rapper in the world, collaborated with Tiger JK in a song called 'Monster'. He took part in creating Jungle Entertainment in 2006, but left with Yoon Mirae and Bizzy to form MFBTY (My Fans [are] Better Than Yours).
